Cambered irons and hollowed stones...

>Just thinking about the article in PW by David Charlesworth. He has a very effective method for producing a cambered iron on a plane blade.
In the article there was a side bar about a diamond plate with a non flat(read hollowed) surface. I believe the hollow was linear. This was able to produce a "pre" cambered iron and required just additional refinement to use.
Later I considered that most of the stones found in old kits were hollowed also but in the narrow dimension. I think that this produced a cambered iron because the normal stroke was with the blade at an angle to the stone...not perpendicular to the length. With reversal of the blade from one skew to the complementary angle the camber will be a natural result. Backing off the wire edge could be done on the edge or end of the top surface where the stone remains flat.
I think the old timers didn't have flat stones because they didn't need them. They also were skilled enough to produce a flat back when necessary. Straight honed plane blades...didn't need them or use them.
If Davids article re discovers an old skill, then the need for a flat stone may have evaporated. At least with regards to the materials in use at the time.
Any other thoughts on this? Adam C... could this be a good hypothosis?JR
