>It is commonly agreed upon by people who really know saws that the nib had no purpose other than decoration. This makes perfect sense to me. Yes, it can be used to hold a rope, but that is not what it was designed for. I keep looking for a painted panther saw; I think this would be the coolest wall hanging ever ;) I remember as a young boy, my mom worked in a restaurant, Peddler's Village, that had a number of booths around with crafts for sale. One booth had a lady that painted saws; I still remember those walls of saws hanging there, seeing all the fancy old handles; I shudder to think of the opportunites I missed due to my ignorance of tools.
Baloney fact #1; the nib is used to start the cut
Baloney fact #2; the nib is used to hold a guard
Baloney fact #3; the nib is used to temper the saw
How many other reasons have I heard for the nib?
