Crazy Eights!!!

Doug

>Please help me to justify the purchase of yet another number 8. First it was the Stanley-I had to have it to complete the 3-8 set that EVERYONE needs. Then the Union came along, mislabeled on ebay in very good shape at a good price. It was corrugated so I explained that away by having one of each type of sole. Then, last night I saw an Ohio that I bid on and won-it's got the original iron so hopefully it will be one of those ultra-thick tapered jobs. Did Sargent make a 24 inch plane? These monsters have to quit heading South, I've still got too many other types to coll....use, that's the ticket.

>Ohio used thick, tapered, laminated irons on all their planes. Even the irons on their block planes taper, altho not very much. Sharpen up that O8, I think you'll like it. I like mine so much, I sold my square side Bedrock 8.

Vaughan and Bushnell made at least two, maybe three versions of an #8, and of course there's Record, and Winchester and Lakeside and Sears and....

I can 'splain!

>The Bedrock (which I upgraded with a Hock blade) worked really well, it just outweighed me by 25 pounds or so. I can use the Ohio for much longer without feeling like I just went 10 rounds with Rocky.

Almost forgot

Neal (San Jose)

>Ohio made two different models of the O8: the standard (which you probably have) and the so-called "Ohio Bedrock" which has a blade adjuster screw and a patent date in front of the tote of 8.20.07. Actually four if you count smooth and corrugated. You had better get busy; you have a lot of planes to find!!!

Evil laughing!!!

>I didn't tell him he needed every model of a #8 ever made! However, as long as he's doing it, he may as well do it right. You may notice that I didn't mention patent planes or transitionals - I'm not totally without feeling.
