Bedrock 605 Damaged Frog

George@Colonel's Workshop-Havertown PA

>Good Evening Friends,

I have received a few planes from a dear friend's estate. One of the metal planes is a badly beat up Bedrock 605. When I cleaned it up I noticed the frog had been damaged and the upper portion has been cracked off below the horizontal adjustment lever. The whole top of the frog is missing. I was able to get some sweet shavings from the plane, not withstanding the damage to the frog. I'd like to get a replacement part. Who sells Bedrock parts, and what is it likely to cost? Thanks.

George

Our own Todd Hughes breaks planes for spares, and charges what the market will bear.

Your best bet is probably to buy a whole Bedrock plane with some (lots!) damage (but not to the frog, obviously). Broken things sell for less than parts, which is why Todd breaks 'em up.

I got lucky

Neal (San Jose)

>I picked up a type 3 Bedrock with a frog that had been brazed back togther right where your's broke for real cheap. I watched Ebay for a year or so - the Bedrock was usable, so I wasn't in a hurry - and got a frog for about $20 plus shipping.

If you are in a hurry, there are a couple of guys that advertise in FWW and maybe some other mags that sell parts, but they aren't cheap. DAMHIKT! Your best bet along this line might be our own Todd Hughes. I've delt with him several times, and found him to be honest and pretty easy to deal with in kind of a crochety Lee Valley sort of way.

Todd Hughes adjectives...

How many other phrases will we get from our "Mrs Dedhorse" :-)JR

>I have sold a few 605 size frogs on ebay ,[don't have one presently] and they seem to go now between $30-$40 for just the frogs.I always sell the screws seperatly. Be aware that bed rocks took 2 types of frogs,[am pretty sure only 2] with the frogs of the round top and square top planes NOT being interchangable. In my experance frogs for the square tops seem to go for a bit more......Todd

>Colonel,

check the link below, it is to a parts dealer. Be prepared for some $$$ shock tho! I have never done business with this fellow and have no $$$ interest in his sales, but I hear that he has a solid reputation. If, as usual, my links don't work, do a Google search for Bob Kaune.

No financial interest, satisfied customer, met him once several years ago, lovely house, adorable kids, his barn/shop makes me drool.

a half-price solution

Clay Craig

>Hi George,

I bet we can do business! I've just recently had a Type 5/6 604 restored for me, and I am all set except for a 2" Bedrock lever cap. (The lever caps for 604s and 605s are interchangeable - anyone know if the frogs are too? It's likely that a 605 will be the best bet, but just in case ... ) Lots of 605s on eBay have bad wood and cracked or welded castings, but they still seem to go for around $45-50 (!!!). I haven't quite been able to 'pull the trigger' at that price, but at half, we could both do much better.

I assume yours is flat-sides, right?

Drop me a line - if you are interested, I'll hunt us up a few likely candidates on eBay and forward links to you - we pick one we like, and then divide it up - the frog for you, and lever cap for me. The frog and the lever cap each seem to go at about the same price, so I suppose we'll just split the total 50/50 - that way, we'll each get the part we want, and pay about half what it would have cost each of us otherwise!

I'll email you a cc of this note, in case you miss it here ...

Let me know if you're interested, OK?

Thanks (and, you have VERY good timing!)

Clay

>Hi Clay,

I need a square-sided #604 frog so I'd be interested in your proposition if George isn't.
