YAQ - Pitted iron, what to do?

The iron on the Stanley No.6 I am restoring has some pitting on the back of the blade, enough so that I don't think I can get a clean face without taking away too much steel.
I've tried using my burnisher to put a "hook" on the bevel to draw some fresh steel down, maybe I didn't go hard enough, but the results aren't totally satisfactory...
Short of getting a new blade, are there ways to do a good job?
If possible at all I'd like to keep the original blade, for sentimental/historical reasons...
Thnx,
