Help! I can't thread my dowel
Nemo Tools
>Hi, all. I'm making a leg vice for my work bench. In the true neander style, I'm trying to do everything sans electrons. My attempts at threading a dowel have been a disaster. I have one of those threading kits that you can get from several wood working supply stores. The tap seems to work o.k. but the die doesn't. I just get a chewed up mess. Any suggestions?
I'm practicing on a 1 1/4" closet hanger rod, probably spruce. Maybe hardwood would survive better?
The cutter is supposed to be sharp and adjusted from the factory. Right!
I soaked my dowel in tung oil for several days as suggested, but it still didn't cut well. In fact, my dowel seems too soft now.
Save me from having to resort to one of those forked tail demon router threader jigs.
