Oak Leaf Chisel

Thomas Skaggs, Foothills of Mount Level

>Folks,

I recently bought an old 1 1/2" framing chisel at an antique show. It's a really nice chisel and feels wonderful in my hands.

The chisel is stamped "Oak Leaf" and bears a small stamped image of an oak leaf.

By chance has anyone heard of that maker?

>I have a similar chisel, think it might even be 1-1/2", but have never researched the maker. It seems to be pretty good steel.

>Tommy,

According to Roger Smith's book Patented Transitional & Metallic Planes in America Vol. II, Oakleaf was one of hardware distributor E. C. Simmons brand names.

Smith says there are planes marked Oakleaf but I don't beieve I've seen one of those. Their chisels don't seem to be rare, I run across them once in awhile. The ones I've seen seem to be well made tools.

>I have a few of their chisels, but have yet to use any of them. I also ran across a nice Oak Leaf hand saw that I picked up. It seems like a better quality saw and the equivalent of a D-8 but with a carved handle (I guess a D-100 would therefore be closer). I have come acroos a few other types of Oak Leaf tools, but I don't remember what they were right off the top of my head.

>Look at the handle could it be a #12 they have a distinct handle. or you could be mistaken and it be a D23 which is a lesser quality I beleave. If you think it is truly better it could also be made by Atkins I think they arre better quality myself.
