Plane building failure

>I thought that other beginners might benefit of a story of non-success for a change and maybe learn through my mistakes.

For background; I have currently in use following self-made planes: a scrub with a curved Hock blade, a jack with a Hock blade and a smoother with a small japanese blade. I made the first planes about 3 years ago a'la Krenov but scrapped them after pin failures. Those above are made by gluing sides with grooves for wedge and blade to a centre in two pieces, which method I find to be easy and sufficient to my needs as I prefer wooden planes. All serve as intended.

This time I got a really nice thick blade without a chipbreaker from Rolf Schmid from Germany (A2 cryogenically treated and sharp)and I thought I'd try a low angle bevel up after reading so much about them. It just doesn't work on endgrain as meant.

First the bottom behind the blade bulged a lot though the center is made of ebony. After flattening the bottom, the mouth was too large so I made a shimmy. Next I found that the nose should be much longer to start the cut well and level.

It's VERY difficult to set the blade though I'm used to woodies, probably due to the thin seat. I have a wider japanese plane that outperforms this coming and going on endgrain any time and is easier to use IMO.

So I'll make a try plane with the nice blade as I originally intended and write a loss with couple of pieces of nice wood and a gain in learning and a nice time in the shop well spent.

Constructive comments are naturally what I hope for.

Now that I've used it a bit more, I must say that I'm not inclined to make another one in that pattern (it's OK, but not great -- many of the same problems as you describe)... But before I made that plane, I'd made another in the roughly the same style, but never got it to work well at all, and after trying various things for a while, eventually ended up with a bunch of random chunks of wood rather than a plane. :)

But none of those efforts ever looked as cool as yours, so even if yout plsnr doesn't work for you, well, you are still one up on me!

It is what we make of our unsuccessful attempts that truly differentiates us. In my own experience I can recall spending more than six months and three attempts at creating our shoulder plane. Eventually the perserverance paid off!

My young son (he's nine) is learning this now. For the past year or more he has made three attempts at playing competitive baseball. Although he trains winter and summer, he has been somewhat limited primarily by his heavier physique. With each set-back, we have admitted and addressed weaknesses. We have looked at the positions he is best suited for and added versatility. Finally he has come into his own and the work has paid off. His first game was Monday night and he hit a deep RBI double followed by two singles in his three at bats. He did a stellar job at Catching, as well. He is a year underage but will likely pitch tonight. At nine he has good control with average speeds of about 46 to 47 mph. Who'd have thought he had such a hard time finding a spot on a good team?

It's all in the approach and learning to have fun along the way.

Your boy is doing well at 46mph. I recently held my 7 yr olds birthday at a local baseball joint where they had a radar gun. Having criticised major leaguers for their "pathetic" 85mph fastballs, I was shocked to find out that mine is 63mph!

Woodworking is not the only hobby that can humble us......

low angle , bevel down = success

>Had you turned the blade the other way it would have been a success. When bedded at 35 degrees an iron ground at 25 degrees has plenty of clearance and at an effective angle of 35 degrees it will be even "lower angle" than the traditional bevel up low angle plane.

As a demonstration to skeptics that this indeed works I once made a continuous shaving across 16" of soft basswood endgrain.

Anytime you spend time doing something constructive and it dosen't work out as invisioned it is still not a failure, as somewhere in the process you leaned SOMETHING! I think your plane looks god, and I'm sure that you'll eventually get it to do something. Would be interested to hear what happens when you turn the blade over as Bill suggested.

>says that an experiment is a failure only if you don't design it well enough to test your hypothesis. If it is designed well enough, the outcome can't be a failure: your hypothesis is supported or it's not.

Looks like you've determined that bevel up low angle planes shouldn't be made of wood - a useful lesson.

I would be glad to be somewhere near 63 right now. In fact, I am wondering how many more years I will have before I cannot catch him. The coach pitched him one inning in last nights exhibition - three up/three down.

We're doing well - running a little ragged now with the balance between learning new equipment, building planes and getting stuff out the door. Having fun though.
