block plane question

chichi

>I have a couple of block planes and when I change the blade adjustment or use the lateral blade adjustment, the cap iron gets loose so I have to take a screw driver and retighten. I must have something out of adjustment because this cannot be right. Once I retighten, they work fine, but this condition inhibits the use of the adjusting mechanisms for fear of having to stop and retighten. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Bob

What kind?

Jim Reed @Tallahassee

>Depends on the adjuster and the plane. Some inexpensive block planes are hard to adjust. In addition, if your cut is too aggressive, then the blade will shift during use. Adjust your plane so that it peels slight wisps that you can blow off the workbench with a tiny puff of air. A sharp blade also helps. Good luck.
