Made some backsaws... *PICS*

L. Hanson

>Just thought I'd show some of what I've been working on for the last while. I've been busy making back saws for some friends, in both 6" and 8" varieties. The 8" saws have a .020" thick blade and are filed at 15 PPI rip, and the 6" saws have a .015" thick blade and are filed at 17 PPI rip. I made them using several types of wood, including:

Bubinga:

Pao Ferro:

and Goncalo Alves:

I also made some from cherry, walnut, and lyptus, which can be seen here if anyone is interested. What a lot of fun!

Thanks for looking!

>I thought the lyptus was quite easy to work... quite similar to mahogany, in that respect. It sands easy, shapes easily, and finishes well... I was quite impressed by it. I'll be using it again, for sure... though I would say that the Pao Ferro, IMO, was the best wood choice for handles from what I used for these - of course, it was also the most expensive!

>Thanks Todd!

The steel is blue-tempered and polished 1095 spring steel in either .015" thick (for the 6" saw) or .020" thick (for the 8" saw), hardened to Rc-48-52. The brass is .093" thick cartridge brass on the 8" saw and .080" thick brass on the 6" saw.

Here's a shot of the raw materials:
