New saw handles
Skip in Falls Church
>Jim Crammond gave me some apple a while back to make some saw handles. I finally finished them and hope he feels I used his wood wisely. I made them using all hand tools except for using a drill press to make the holes for the saw nuts. I cut them out with a coping saw, planed them to size then used a microplane and rasps to get them into shape.
For the handle that had the knot in the back of the handle, I took Bill's suggestion and filled it with a 50:50 mix of apple saw dust and epoxy. Since the knot was deeper than I first thought, I think the epoxy method worked better than drill and plug would have. I finished them with 2 coats of BLO
I still have one long piece a couple of inches wide that I will probably make another handle out of.
