Record/Marples holdfast mounting question

>I just got a couple of the large ones (the M146) for my new bench, and was wondering how far from the face and tail edges of the bench others who have them mounted them. The instructions give the minimum distance from an edge, but I'm wondering if it's optimal.
I used one of these to hold down relief carvings at a school where I used to take classes, and it was mounted pretty far in. But this new bench is intended for more general woodworking, so I was curious to learn what others have done. I would be very grateful to hear anyone else's experiences with these.
