Success tonight!!!

>Well, after tonight's success I have to backtrack on my assertion of 5-10 minutes of planing between sharpenings. This evening I managed to plane for quite a while on a single sharpening - much longer than before.

I did three things differently, so my "controlled" experiment is a complete failure and I don't know which of the things led to this improvement.

First, I concentrated on my sharpening today. I don't think the edge was much sharper than before, but you never know. I also reduced my bevel angles by several degrees. I spent slightly longer on the 8000 stone than I normally do.

Second, I concentrated on lifting the plane for the return stroke. Previously I dragged the plane about half of the time.

To make a long story short, I was planing maple away all evening without resorting to resharpening every 10 minutes. Certainly half an hour of continuous planing.

Thanks for your tips.

poorly written

>The itemization was poorly written:

1. Reduced bevel angles several degrees and concentrated on sharpening process.

2. Spent more time honing on the 8000 stone than I normally do.

3. Faithfully lifted up the plane on the return stroke.
