USA vs UK Stanley iron

>I spent a few hours today lapping the soles of a three Stanley planes (USA: #7 Type 11, #5-1/2 Type 15; UK: #5-1/2 Type 19). The thought has occurred to me on other occasions, but it was very noticeable today - the iron on USA Stanley planes appears much harder than that of UK Stanley planes. This is inspite of the UK versions often feeling heavier.
The obvious possibilities are (1) USA and UK iron has always been different, with USA iron harder than UK iron. (2) Earlier iron is different (harder) than later iron (so more recently made planes are softer than earlier-made planes).
Can anyone throw some light on this? An idle mind wants to know.
