>Here is a picture of a post and rung stool I made out of red oak. It is inspired by one made by Brian Boggs published in FWW in 2001. Unlike Brians, I did not use a lathe. Instead, I made it using a shaving horse, drawknife, spokeshave, a dowel plate made by Lie-Nielson to cut the tenons. I'll admit to using a drill press to cuttin the mortises. I think I'll have my students use a bit and brace though. The seat is hickory bark. The finish is lacquer over tung oil.

What do you think?

If not,where did you get them?I have lots of red oak and I'd like to try to make that seat.I've been thinking seriously about making chairs lately and that looks like a good place to start. I just thought of another question. Did you use fully dried oak?

>I bought green, riven oak from a man named Russ Cherry that I found on woodfinder. Green oak on a shaving horse is fun (like shaving a big hunk of hard cheese), KD oak is like shaving steel. The bark was left over from a chair class that I took with the great Brian Boggs himself. He got it from a company called the Unfinished Universe (859)-252-3289. Also, the caning shop in California is referenced in his article (800) 986-4638. I believe his company sells it as well (occasionally).

>I shave the rungs to octogons tapered to about 11/16s on the ends 1 inch in the middle. I then dry them in the oven and then take them to their final size and cut the tenons. So, yes the tenons are dry and the mortise is wet.

HIJACK: Baseboard?

Secondly, you have the same floor tiles that are in most of our house. My wife saw the picture, and is making noises about the baseboard. How many pieces is it made up of?

>LOL. Your in luck. The baseboard is two pieces. Most of it is stock MDF baseboard from Home Depot with the addition of a pine quarter round shoe molding.

>Very nice stool. I like the top rung design. You probably know you could make it easier on your students if they made the top rungs exactly like all of the rest of them. The holes for the front and back top rungs would be drilled slightly lower into the posts than the side ones. This also gives the benefit of a slight saddling effect that cuts the sitter's legs at the edge a little less. But it doesn't look as nice as yours, in my opinion!

>I like the look of this stool so much over a more conventional stool that I'll use machines to make the seat frame ahead of time and make it part of the purchase price of the class. The students will simply make the base, join it to the seat, apply finish to the framework and weave the seat.
