>Does anyone know what chemical is used to seal a granite counter top. I seem to recall reading somewhere that it is mineral oil but that doesn't make sense to me. TIA

>Right, it is polished. However, granite is porous and requires a sealer to prevent what might be charitably referred to as "interesting" organisms from colonizing in the pores.

"Gold" something or other is what I used on my floor grout and granite counters - fresh strawberry smushings have been accidentally left overnight without staining. IIRC, I picked up at Lowe's and I'm sure HD and other hardware stores have tile/grout/stone sealers.

>Mineral oil is the traditional finish for soapstone counters. Granite counter fabricators recommend using one of the many new stone sealers available at dealers and home centers. You will find them mostly comprised of polymers to assure longevity, waxes will wear away annoyingly fast. You will want to reapply the sealer at least once a year.
