The system works!

>The backsaw came today.

A nice Jackson, cast steel with a sweet handle that just fits my big old mitt. It` straight and relatively sharp with no pitting of staining. All for the grand total of $7.48.

At the risk of giving away trade secrets I`ve found that plain backsaw autions go rather high but if you look in the miter box auctions you can come across a deal now and then.I won this auction for $2.99.Listed as an old miter box and backsaw combination.Told the seller to keep the box and ship the saw.

Saw an old Stanley miter box(the kind that`s adjustable w/guides) and a shiney, large Diston backsaw saw go for $5.00 earlier this week.Worth a shot if you need a good saw for cheap.Hopefully you won`t have to wait as long as I did,it was worth it though.

>Problem with some backsaws equipped with a miter box is that they are HUGE, even bigger than Adam's proverbial tenon saw. This can make them just a wee bit difficult to control if not installed in the miter box.

It's a great tip, gloatable, even. Miter boxes, especially the newer ones, and the larger ones, often go for cheap even at the antique tool events. Newer ones also can have great steel in the saw blade, even if the handle is clunky. Fixing the handle is the easy part.

>The Jackson and several others I`ve seen, including a Diston I bought for my brother for $5, are of the type you would normally use for joinery(12" long by 4" high). They are usually coupled with an old wood miter box.

I mentioned the huge Diston with the Stanley box because I remembered that some folks were asking about them awhile back.I imagine the freight for one of the large saws and an all metal adjustable box would be rather steep.
