spoon contest rules?

>I set out to make a one hour spoon from firewood today, and got about 40 minutes into it when the spoon snapped in two at the bowl/handle joint. Oh well.
One problem is that it's April, I'm down to the end of the firewood store, and there isn't much in the way of worthwhile wood left. I noticed that one person had made his spoon from 2x stock. Is that allowed for the contest? I'd like to use 5/4 or 8/4 cherry because it's fun to carve. If it is allowed to use lumberyard wood rather than a log, is there a time limit adjustment that we'd have to make to compensate for not having to deal with splitting the log or removing bark, and for already having a flat surface to work with?
