making "round" plane question

>I think round is the proper term. In any case it is the plane with a radiused iron for making troughs. I need to make one to make a concave radius in a curved door. I have made various planes but none with a round sole.
Do you make the sole and fit the iron profile to the sole profile or make a sole profile to fit the iron? And on making the sole profile, I suppose one just planes away testing with a radius gague until it's about right?
Frankly it seems impossibly difficult getting everything to come together with the required precision. If my flat soled planes get off by a few thousandths they quit planing. translating this precision to a curved sole is daunting.
