coffin smoother with tote
Jack Guzman from Maine
>I was asked to post a picture of this in the hand tools chat room. What I called it was a coffin style smoother with a tote. I don't believe this is that unusual though.I believe my description was a little faulty. I believe this would be called a razee style smoother.
I got this cheap and really like the style. This one is a mess. The front is split, glued and held together with screws and there are several nails in the sides. It has a nice clean iron and chipbreaker.I'm going to try to reproduce it using some 12/4 hard maple I have left from making my bench.I could probably make it useable real easy but I want to make a plane anyhow and this one would make a good project.
I have one question. How should I orient the grain? This one has the grain running parallel to the sole. Is this why it cracked? I was also thinking that the iron may be a little wide for the body. I may make it a bit wider for that reason.
This will be my first attempt at making a plane. I'll post results when I finish.---Jack
