The economics of buying versus making a plane tote are exactly as Todd stated; it really makes no monetary sense to make your own handles when you can buy an original handle about like new for less than $30. I have made various handles, and I'm not real slow but not fast either; I spend more than an hour making a plane tote; probably closer to two hours, if I'm particular maybe three hours. If I was to calculate the real cost of that plane tote in terms of what I could be earning during that time the actual cost of the tote, if you figure overhead and profit plus benefits like vacations and health insurance that tote probably cost me a hundred bucks.
On the other hand, if I was to work one hundred percent of my time, I would soon be burnt out and I would actually be less productive over a lifetime than I will be if I work about 50 or 60 hours a week, sleep about 56 hours per week, and divide the rest of my time doing various hobbys and spend time with my family. So I might actually be gaining money by relaxing and making a plane tote; it is an abstract figure.
I enjoy taking beat up old planes and making them back into functional tools; it has absolutely nothing to do with the economics of it, and everything to do with doing something constructive, educational, challenging, and rewarding.
