Wonderful Wetzler clamp question

>I just ordered and received some clamps from Wetzler. These things are heavy and look as if they would last at least 3 generations of hobbiest use. Unlike clamps from Bessey or Jorgy, these have a dark colored bar that looks like raw steel. It seems that even after wiping these down, black or brown stuff comes off these onto my hands and then onto my project. Is there a trick to cleaning these up or dealing with these? Seems like something that would inhibit rust, but not come off on the wood would be the ticket. Thanks!
