>Jerry,
in Pollak's American Wooden planes, page 338:
Emanuel F. Seybold was listed in cincinnati OH 1836-44.
They give them a rating of 3 stars, so it means it is very rare, only 50 to 100 specimeans known, so you done good, congrats!
Jorge

>Emanual F.Seybold was listed as a planemake in the 1836-44 Cincinnati directories and a hardware store merchant from 1849-52.In 1850 he was reported as having 12 workers and making $12,000 worth of planes. he was artners with various other makers and planes with his name as well as John Smith and a Spencer are known....all this info is from the book American Wooden planes....Todd

>My copy shows for different imprints for this maker ranging from FF, [frequently found up to 3 stars[Very Rare 50-100 known] from the description of the stamp sounds like to me it is the "B" stamp which is rated 1 star which denotes "Uncommon"....In my experance the amount of stars or the planes rarety have little to do with thier vaule or deirabilty in most cases. Actually can hurt the vaule I believe as more people are looking for certain more common makers that they collect. Most Cesar Chelor planes are rated at 2 stars yet they are much more desirable then about any 4 star planes...The star system is fun but how accurate?...they never came to check my wood planes!.....Todd

>Hi Todd,
You are right, that system is not accurate if they have not even looked at your planes, or mine! :o)

>Jerry,
I always get tools with the intent of using them, some work nicely some don't, then I get rid of the ones that do not work well for me.
I'll say use it!
Have fun
