Old planes

>I have developed an interest in purchasing planes both new and old, some to keep, and some to re-sell, and I was wondering about cleaning, sharpening, etc.... When you buy a used plane do you prefer to buy one that has the years of rust and dirt on it or would you like it better cleaned and sharpened ready to use or show? If I clean one (not repainting or refinishing, just a good general cleaning) does it decrease any value that it may have had? I just don't know whether or not I need to spend any time on the ones that I plan on re-selling.
