Frustrated Sharpener
Jonathan Peck - N.Y.
>Ack! Can't say I enjoy sharpening, never have, and probably never will. I got a set of the LN butt chisels few weeks back. Can't say much exceptin I like the length and balance of these stubby's which I intend to use for dovetails (if I ever get them sharpened:-(
I don't want to hollow grind these for some sadistic reason. So I get at on my waterstones and LV sharpening jig crutch. I keep fiddling to get the bezel straight and wind up going for the 220G stone to fix up my mistakes.
Well seems you gotta maintain these little jiggers. also seems there's enough crud up in the little rolley wheeley so's that it don't roll. Course I did a good job of it putting a bunch of flat spots in the used to be round rolley thingey before I noticed, and my chisel isn't any better off either.
So who needs a jiggy crutch anyways I ask. Not me, I can do this freehand, so's in the trash bin it goes. Exceptin A2 steel is pretty darn hard and I can't push down that hard and keep my bezel registered, but I'm trying.
So I'm sweating gruntin and cussin mad cuz I can't even get one chisel sharp, got four more to go, and now my stone's all rutted up again and needs flattening....Ack!
Plus now since I got a snobby dedicated dovetail set, I still gotta keep my regular beaters sharped, and they're A2 too.
Geeeez, that MKII wizbang sharping wheel plug in jobbie's gonna set me back, but it does seem like the way to go considering most the steel in my shop's A2, but I just can't pull the trigger. Is it as miraculas as it looks??
