Central Florida Get-Together UPDATE

mfitterling in Lake Wales, FL

>Get-together will be the 12th at my shop in Lake Wales. I am thinking a time of 3 PM until whenever, so anyone going to the Woodworking Show in Orlando (really it is in Kissimmee) will have time for both. If you want to come hang out earlier ya'll are welcome to. I will be going to the show on Friday, the 11th, so I can set things up Sat morning.

I will provide beer and soft drinks. If you have a specific brew you prefer, bring it along. I will also help Knot (Woodnet member and rib cook par excellence)with the cost of the ribs. By the way, I have a venison shoulder if anyone is interested in cooking that, too. I'm not much of a cook, but I am willing to donate it to the cause if anyone wants to cook it. Let me know so I can thaw it in time.

One person has offered to bring their lathe. If anyone else is interested in doing a demo, etc. please let me know. At your disposal are all my tools: 18" bandsaw, 12" bandsaw, tablesaw, mitre saw, radial arm saw, benchtop mortiser, drill press, planer, jointer, routers and table (not too many bits), wet grinder, combo sander, spindle sander, shaper (not too many bits), scroll saw, and a range of handplanes and hand tools. Maybe someone would like to rehab a plane or do a scary sharp or sharpening demo. French polishing? I'd like to see that done. Just ideas.

I will post a map later so everyone can find their way. There will be no signs this year, as last year when I did this for Woodnet guys the city pulled all our signs as fast as we could post them. Generally, Lake Wales is smack dab in the middle of the peninsula, where US Hwy 27 (north to south) and State Road 60 (east to west, from Tampa to Vero Beach) intersect.

So far, I think we have about 2 dozen coming plus family members, with a few from Woodcentral and a bunch from Woodnet. Please email me at my regular email account and let me know if you are coming. mgeditor@lostclassicsbooks.com

Now, we will need volunteers for napkins, paper plates, utensils, potato salad, coleslaw, desert, etc.

Thanks All. See you on the 12th.

>Rod's map has one small problem that might be confusing. It's not Rod's fault. The road running north and south through the middle of town is also labeled US 27. In actuality, this is US Alternate 27, locally called "Scenic Highway". The true US 27 is the north-south road on the left side of the map.

If you are traveling south on U.S. 27, in a hurry, running late, and want to avoid traffic in the middle of town, there's another way. Before getting into Lake Wales (just off the top of Rod's map), turn left on Mountain Lake Cutoff, go about a half a mile, turn right on Alternate 27, go just about a mile and turn left on Burns Ave. (Alt 17). Go about 1/2 mile, and turn right on 5th Street, down the hill. It may be labeled Indiana? This runs into N. Wales Blvd, and Mike's house will be about a half mile on the right.

Addy protocol: I grew up in Lake Wales.

>You're right; ALT 27 is east of the MAIN US HWY 27. I'll see if Rod can change that.

One correction to your alternate directions. Burns Avenue is ALT 17. The street you mention as Indiana I think has a different name, but for the life of me I can't recall it. On Yahoo maps it is called Old Scenic Highway. Anyway, it would be the first street you come to after turning onto Burns Avenue and you would turn right. That street ends at North Street (also now called Dr. Wiltshire) and that street runs down the hill past Spook Hill Elementary School and Ts at North Wales Drive, where you then take a right, then again a right at 5th Street, then look for the board on board privacy fence on your left.

>Mike, I won't make it :^(. It's the same weekend as the PATINA dealer sale and auction in Damascus, MD, which I really don't want to miss. I had delayed making a decision until they posted the date this year, hoping PATINA would be scheduled for a different weekend, but those old geezers are set in their ways, and they do it just about the same way every year.

Potomac Antique Tools and Industries Association

I think we should forget about the alternate directions. I wasn't much help. Trying to follow them will just get people lost. Sorry. Just follow Rod's directions. The route through the middle of town is scenic.

>Well, too bad, but one day we shall meet. Sounds like you will still have some fun. I'd love to go to something like that. Can you beleive it, my collection is still not complete!

Rod has changed the map to show ALT 27 so it is more clear now. The road off Burns is called Old Scenic Highway; I just drove by it tonight on the way to Home Depot.

Have fun at PATINA.

Duffield Number

Rod Peterson -- Ormond Beach

>Hey, Mike. Don't worry about meeting W.D. I met him at 5ive Barns last summer, which makes my Duffield Number 1, and I'll be meeting you in a couple weeks, which will make your Duffield Number 2.

As long as your Duffield Number is less than 5, you practically know him.

Rod

P.S. Is it still William or is it Bill when our number is below 5?

>Rod, you can call me anything you like, as long as it's not late for dinner.

I have a difficult time convincing anyone to take me seriously enough to call me "William" to my face, unless they are being sarcastic and addressing me as "SWotC" :^).

Are you planning to come to 5ive Barns again this summer?
