Road Trip to Tools for Working Wood

Jay Samuels

>I had to be in the City yesterday, so I took the subway downtown to Tools for Working Wood. It was well worth the trip, if only to gaze longingly at tools I have never seen anywhere else. The Auriou rasps [including my 150mm #13 :) ] are just goregous. Not inexpensive, but when I (with marginal technique) had the #10 demonstrator roughing out rock maple like it was chocolate, I was lost. The rasps are closely followed by the Ashley Isles gouges, and those are closely followed by everything else. The staff is knowledgeable, helpful and apparently very used to seeing the morality play between "need" and "want", as evidenced by my laps around the room picking up various tools. If you go, I don't know whether the proper advice is "take enough cash" or "leave it all home". No affiliation, but had a good time.
