>Alrighty than. finally I have gotten to the bottom of why my S-10 temputeure guage was pegging out after driving for just a few miles.
First however a re-cap.
Temp guage pegged out to it's max of 260 degrees while driving at highway speeds, and dropped down to a decent temp while driving slower.
-I changed the thermostat--no fix
-coolant and it's level was good
-no signs of leaks or colapsing hoses
-Fan was tight on it's shaft
-Oil level was right
-no "milk in the crankcase
-no bubbles in the radiator
-no foul smells
-motor running smooth
-changed the temputure sensor-no fix
-flushed the radiator-no fix
-looked in radiator to see if water was circulating. It was.
-took upper radiator hose off of the radiator to check for output. Looked good to me
-installed new radiator cap-no fix
-got mad and took it to my mechanic
HE:
changed the fan clutch, declared it fix,and charged me $167.
-Drove it two miles, it got hot, so I took it back.
-took the radiator out and had it flow tested and flushed-no fix
Changed temp sensor that goes to the guage-no fix
(Yup, that's right, there are TWO temp sensors, one goes to the computer, one to the guage on the dash)(I didn't know that either)
-changed thermost-no fix
-told me that it now cools at high speeds and gets hot at slow speed
-Suspected either the guage was bad, or the water pump was bad.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo, with his recommedation that I change the water pump("You can do cheaper than I can) I picked it up this morning, changed the water pump, and TA-DA!temp guage does not go aver 210 degrees like it shouldn't.
Well Some Beach, first time I ever seen a water pump go bad that didn't also leak from the weep hole, but that's the case in this case.
Got to go see him Monday Morning to see what I owe him for the radiator flush, etc, etc.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh well, learn something new everyday eh? On the bright side, I've practaclly a new cooling system. Coarse now the heater core will rot out.
Thanks for all the suggestions and interest. Some body actually said water pump, but I'll have to check back to see who.
Jack, change your water pump.
