Low Angle 4 1/2 smoother?

Mike Rubes, Apex, NC

>Hi all,

I am looking for a 4 1/2 sized smoother. Does anyone know if anyone make low angle 4 1/2 in this sized plane? LV and LN both make #4 sized low angle smoothers, but not a 4 1/2. Would it actually be any benefit over a 4? Seems like the extra weight of the 4 1/2 bench plane is what people often say is one of the advantages, but would that matter as much with a low angle plane?

I'm still just starting out on this hand tool stuff but so far find it really, really useful for fine tuning joints and for a lot of situations were a power tool just won't cut it. Not only that, but frankly, it's just a blast running a plane down a board and watching all those thin shavings coming out!

Thanks for any information,

Mike

>I believe Wayne Anderson will make you a plane to your specifications. This LA smoother has a 2+1/4" wide iron bedded at 11 deg. Check out his website for more tool drool

>That thing really is art. I know that because there is a lot of stuff on it that has nothing to do with performance ;) It appears as though you would not be able to tap on the iron to adjust it for a deeper cut. Would you tap on the front of the plane? Or is there an adjuster somewhere that I am not seeing.

>Moses,

You have the coolest name I've ever seen. I've been dropping my pennies in a jar and my mitre plane is now 1/2" long:-0
