More shooting board questions

>I've read the excellent posts here about shooting boards but there are a couple of lingering questions I have as I design one for myself. I understand that the plane has to be "let in" so that the bottom flank of the sole (the part between the blade and the side of the plane) has something to ride against to keep it square. But I'm wondering why I couldn't just make a little fence that would be the thickness of the bottom flank. The side of the plane would ride on the "runway", as I believe, I believe Derek refers to it and the flank would ride against the little fence. In this case, the ramp and the stop would not touch the plane at all.
If I built the shooting board like this, would there be adequate support to keep the plane square?
Thanks!
Mitch
