I've never understood how something old that didn't work for it's intended purpose could be worth less if you fixed it. To that end, I took the iron out, and ran the sole across my jointer to flatten it.
In doing so, I discovered that it appears to be made of beech. I also glued the crack in the handle. Below is the result.
Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll just have to go out and buy a chandelier for the shop now...
