Making a Wooden Jointer

>I'm new to the board and am interested in trying to make a new wooden jointer plane for use. A couple of questions I'd love some input on:
Am I crazy to start with a jointer for my first project or should I start with a smoother and work my way up? I alread have a Knight Toolworks Jack and Smoother, 2 coffin smoothers, and a LN LA Jack so Jointer was the next addition I wanted.
How wide of blade would you go? Metal jointers have blades around the 2-1/2" range but I'd love to use one of the HOCK Krenov style blades which only go to 2" - would that be too small?
Would you use Krenov style lamination or a traditional or 2 piece method. I have some nice beech that were old barn boards about 2" thick that is tight grained and dry as a bone.
Any plans/advice from others tried would be appreciated as well.
