UPdate of infill plane making

>So I screwed up a bit on machining my bronze casting on my #50 (Or #51) Norris Infill. They always say practice on scrap stock--oh well, stupid, stubborn, lots of adjectives went through my mind after I opened the throat up too much. But after some thinking and talking to my machine shop instructor, I think this will still work out. I'm planning on opening up the throat a little more so I can put in an adjustable throat.
I've seen one article in which the guy soldered more bronze in the throat area to give the casting more "meat" to make a sliding throat plate insert. My intructor was saying that he thinks I can still make an insert without having to increase the thickness of the sole. This is the hard part (I really need a picture to explain this). His proposition is that I I machine a recessed groove on the topside of the sole (just underneath the front knob. Then I'm going to machine a throat plate insert that has the following profile:
The insert is to have an offset step to it. the higher step of the insert (the knob/front end) will have a slot machined along its center. Then I'll drill a hole for a machine bolt on the sole of the plane. the shaft of the bolt is to run up through the sole and connect with the upper step of the throat insert. (I'll either secure the throat insert to the sole by installing a nut or even tapping some threads in the insert so the bolt can be tightened. To adjust the throat, I'll have to loosen/tighten the machine bolt from the sole of the plane. Instead of having the throat adjusted by moving the entire toe piece (as in say in a LN LA adjustable throat plane), this throat insert moves, but the toe portion (front part of the sole is fixed. This probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Boy, now I know how those writers of machine instruction manuals feel.
Among the things I'm concerned with is how wide does the front part of the throat plate have to be to produce decent performance and how will the small gap between the toe of the sole and the front part of the throat insert affect the plane's performance.
Plane making can be rather complicated, but I guess my screw up will wind up actually teaching my something more in my shop class. What's that addage again about learning from your mistakes? Gotta think silver lining right?
