>Does anyone know of a good, and preferably cheap program for laying out a shop? I'm spending today moving everything out (except the bench) so that we can FINALLY have french drains installed. Stuff is currently where it is because there was room in that spot when the equipment was moved in.(In other words, very little planning) I'd like to redo things the "right" way and have been thinking about work triangles and such. Any input at all would be appreciated. BTW, this is a hand/power shop and there has been a lot of time at the lathe lately.

>Grizzly has an interactive layout tool on their site. It doesn't give you advice about layout, but you can build the walls of your shop and then it has a figure for each one of the machines.

>I can't imagine anything faster, cheaper or better than drawing shop floor plan on 1/4" graph paper, making scaled cut-out for the tools and then moving the cut- outs around to see what works. It works for me when laying out kitchens and baths.

Something I have seen an architect do......Draw floor plan in dark ink. Overlay this drawing with tracing paper and sketch possibilities on the tracing paper. One can evaluate numerous options quickly with this approach.

>...and you might want to make a scale cutout of a 4x8 sheet of plywood and scale 12' and 14' rough cut lumber, i.e., the longest boards you expect to run through your jointer, or clamp in your tail vise.
