I think this would make it a very early plane for the #45, as production started in 1883. I imagine there are a number of people who are trying to complete a collection of the 45 in all the types, and this is a very good example, one of the best I've seen. This is why I don't think the price is out of line at all. Just wish I were the one selling the plane ;)

After seeing the price that this one is at I confess sort of thought for a few seconds ,[just a few!] about selling mine but I like it and I never sell anything out of my collection as I think it will bring me bad luck. Guess it will be staying out in my Kitchen.....Todd

First, it is a VERY scarce Type 5 made only in 1893/1984(cutter adjustment feature just added but knob is still on the body - note how the picture on the box doesn't have the cutter advance). Second, I have never even seen a picture of the early pasteboard box in this condition - very rare.... Shortly thereafter, they put the knob on the fence, went to the wood boxes (because cardboard was just not durable) and increased production dramatically. The Type 7s and later in the wooden boxes, even in super mint condition, are much more common and would bring maybe 10% of what this one is right now.

PS - I'm not bidding, although I'd like to (kids in college).

$2,500 will buy alot of Ronco products though and they all come in pasteboard boxes from what I`ve seen.;^)

In the course of the lifetime of the plane 1890's-1962 the pasteboard box was used in four different eras (1890's, 1920's, 1940's and again later in the 40's until 1962). Can one be sure that "green" is the answer for the bid? Also I don't see that it's all there. It should have long and short arms, depth stop, instruction book, beading stop and cam rest. Hey good on ya if it's what you want, but bragging rights--to me-- seem dear for that plane.

The seller is a reknown tool dealer and has impeccable credentials. If he says it's all there, I certainly believe him. Of course, a picture showing more of the contents of the box would disspell any questions. I also used to have a type 2 No. 45 and it only had one set of rods which screwed into the main casting, much like the rods for the fence on a no 78 rabbet plane.
