I have a old transitional plane Stanley #22.

At first I wasn't going to restore it, then I decided to go ahead to experience this type of old plane.

The bottom of the sole was gouged, the mouth was very open, and the mouth was also significantly. more often on one end than the other.

I decided to shave a small part of the original beech sole off.

I removed the chamfered part on the bottom edges and went up a bit higher also to make sure I had a flat, clean surface.

I resoled with a 3/16 in. piece of beech, carefully countoured the sides and extended the bed to the same original angle. I used chisels to do this, then I opened the mouth. It's fine now...

Only one problem, a rather large one.

The iron and cap assembly engage in an adjustment pawl.

I can't get the tip of the iron to within 3/8 in. of the bottom Of the sole.. It basically appears too short?

I had a look at everything , explored every option, And am now of the conclusion that either the cap iron is incorrect, the iron is too short, or a combination of both.

The current iron is approx. 6.5 inches in length.

If I have the cap iron snug to the business end of the iron, The pawl does engage....but the whole assembly comes approx. 3/8 in.

Shy of the mouth opening.

I'm wondering if a full 7 in. Long X 1 /4 in. Wide iron will resolve this?

The current iron is shy of 1 3/4 in. , maybe 1/16 narrower.

I measured and a 1 3/4 in. iron will fit snug in the cavity, But the elngth issue is daunting..

It is also very obvious of the design deficiency in this hybrid type plane. The frog cannot really be moved forwards to compensate for any wear in the mought area. If done, the whole length of iron sitting on the wood base is left unsupported.

It needs to be then seriously shimmed..

Any ideas will be welcome.

I have a feeling that your chip breaker is wrong for the plane. The slot the adjuster sits in is in a different position on transitionals and metallic planes. If you have a #4, compare the chip breakers. I believe the slot is higher up on the transitionals. Might want to try Bob Kaune for a correct one.

Are there specs. I can look at.

The location of the square slot in the cap iron seems to be a problem..

If I can have the measurements of the square hole from either end of the cap iron it

would be appreciated.

BTW, the current wooden body height is 1 5/8 in.

which according to a reliable source is well within specs.

>You might be able to rig it by drilling a couple holes in the chipbreaker just north of the current engagment slot. File them out so they are the same size as the slot. You need to have some metal between the new slot and the old slot so the advance elever has something to engage.

I had a fellow woodworkier send me some pictures of both an old Stanley transitional plane and metal plane cap iron.

He also provides dimensins and offsets of the holes and slots of both the iron and cap iron.

The square slot is considerably higher than on a metal plane.

What is likely the issue is the wear of the iron itself.

It is down to 1 3/8 in. available iron ahead of the bottom of the slot.. It is 2 in. in a normal new iron for a total length of 7 in. This iron is 6 1/8 in. long.

So I'll try a new iron and take it from there.

Hope this does it...

After re-soling the plane, I like the feel of it...

>If you have the correct cap iron, and you're securing it to the blade, with just a few thousandths of blade exposed beyond the cap iron, I don't think the blade has anything to do with the problem. I suspect that when you re soled the plane, that the total wood thickness is now thicker top to bottom than the original.

When you "Opened the mouth", did you do it by jointing the bottom, or chopping it open in front of the blade? I think Bob Smalser has an article that you can search for that describes the process he uses on woodies that should also work on your transitional.I think you'll have to joint the bottom until the blade exposes correctly, but you'll end up with the mouth a little more open.

I somehow feel you're going to be right about this.

I haven't found a replacement plane iron (1 3/4 in.) yet..

Would I would dearly like to have is the specification for the height of the Stanley #22 wooden body height.

My wood plane body is currently (re-sole included) approx. 1 5/8 in. high.

I chiseled the mouth opening out from the top

very carefully using the existing iron bed as

references. A little tedious but necessary..

I planed the original , gouged sole down approx. 1/8 in to both remove the gouges and chamfering along the bottom edges.

If it weren't for the deep gouges, I might have simply added a thicker mouth insert ahead of the mouth opening and planed it down..
