>Ran across one yesterday and wondered how many thousands of this 12in model they produced? Perhaps it is rare? Did not purchase because it seemed over priced to me- -at $40, but then, I am not a furniture maker. Any views? Phil

>Although I'm not very well acquainted with the market for such a saw, I did buy a 12" Disston back saw a little over a year ago. The saw is at home and I'm at work (not right now though) and I don't remember the model number, but it is an older one. As I recall I paid about that for my saw. To me as a user , not collector (or at least I refuse to admit it), the answer to your question depends on the condition of the saw. My saw was in very good condition. Solid handle, straight and sharp blade, no pitting. It's a great saw. The way I looked at it was that $40-$50 for this saw is probably about $100+ less than a comparable new model and at most I would save $10-$15 dollars by shopping around.

Bottom line is that if it's a "user" and in good condition, $40 is a bargain, IMO.

>Saw a Chevy the other day, had 2 doors...Was priced at $2,000.....was that to much? Well was it a '81 Chevet or a '58 Corvet, eh? According to age and condition a Disston 12 in. backsaw is probably worth between $1.00 and $400.00. I live in old tool hell but most I buy I pay between $3 and $10 for though have seen them as high as $20 which is unusual.I would think a nice 12 in. Disston with no problims and from the 1930's-40's on ebay would bring about $40. A real nice clean one with a good etch and nice looking handle could go twice that.A nice early Henery Disston with an eagle on it could easly go for a few hundered....When you think about what you are getting, a nice high quality beautiful classic tool that will last you the rest of your life, $40 is pretty cheap.....of course even better when you get them for $3.....Todd

>I found a 12in. Disston with the double eagle stamps on the back. It's one of the earliest saws according to the Disstonian site. Are they really going for $200?
