>I had $50 that the wife gave me for Xmas with a "Tools Only" tag attached to it,being the next best thing to housebound I went to the dreaded `bay and went trolling.

Chisels were thru the roof so I thought about maybe scoring some Bedrock parts for my brother Bill to repair one of his finds(and eventually talk or trade him out of it).I`d just about decided that it was time for me to own a Bedrock,strictly for comparison purposes.

I came in on the last 6 hours and fired off an e-mail that wasn`t answered but bid anyway as I only needed the frog and it looked good.What I got in the mail was a complete plane,75% jappaning,with no breaks,cracks,not so much as a chip.The only serious blemish was a small hang hole in the toe.Surface rust only(somebody dipped it in diesel after it started to rust),long SW iron,Bedrock lever cap.

The knob and tote are pretty well trashed(and diesel soaked) and the frog adjustment fork bolt`s missing(threads in hole still good) but I guess I can`t complain for less than $55.

It came out of Tulsa OK.Real nice seller.He`s aWWer too,answered alot of questions after the auction while I was waiting for it to arrive,the kind of guy you wish everyone was.

The question is gang,where was everybody?How come you let this get by to old slow and thrifty?I know,you were just being kind because I deserved a break right?

Don`t say there are no good deals out there on E-bay,especially during the holidays.Sometimes you get a whole lot more than you`d hoped for.

It may not be a 603C in a box of adjustment tools for $61 but it`s as close as I believe I`ll ever get.

Mainely,Bob-Who may be selling some jack sized woodies here real cheap.

I picked up a 605 a couple of weeks ago that was in surprisingly good condition for slightly more than you paid. It turned out to have better than 90% jappanning, good knob, tote, blade, etc...

As to the difference between a Bedrock and a Bailey... IMHO, If you have a Bailey plane where you have taken the time to make the frog seat almost perfectly, performance will be similar to the Bedrock. It is just easier to get the Bedrock frog to seat that well.

That hang hole was probably the reason. I can't recall that one specifically, but I usually just keep on clicking if there is a hole or a crack. I must be a snob. In retrospect though, a 604 flat top rusted into a solid block brought $40 a while ago so you did well. And it will work just fine.

In my forecast I see the values kind of reaching a plateau in the next couple years but still climbing gradually, and then really climbing when everyone's basements are cleaned out and tools start getting more scarce. A 605 for $50 is still a gloatable deal; now and then you just happen to get lucky; I have one pretty nice 605 and two more that are usable, so am not looking for any more ;)

I am a carpenter by trade.Also a handyman/Jack -of-all-trades.I work around my neighborhood mostly helping people keep up their old houses.I have a fairly large woodworking shop in my house where I work with both hand and power tools. At the moment I'm focusing on Windsor chairs building.I will build most anything if needed. I'm always learning,adapting,changing trying to broaden my woodworking skills.I work mostly with hand tools in my shop but will use power if it is a better way to get the desired result. My wife,Donna,and I live in the woods of Maine with our dogs,cats,and birds. We have 5 grown kids and six grandchildren. Woodcentral has been central to my growth as a woodworker. I pass through this place every day.

Okay, just step back from the computer and tell us the site and you can leave in one piece!Very stealthy gloat! I suppose this auction site is like a fishin' hole , can't tell anyone or it'll be fished out?

>It's a local auction house you really wouldn't be interested they don't want to ship they charge $20 for a packing fee on top of a shipping fee. and there is also a fee of $5 for every day the item is not picked up. and last of all there is a 10% buyers premium! Yes you could call it a fishin hole next weeks auction is a 60 1/2 #4 #78 with all the goodies and a pile of 110-220's bad thing is the minumim bid is $10 unless you are present and there is also a stack of back saws? wonder if I should bid on them?
