Chalk Up Another One
Tom MacGregor
>A local builder stopped by with a 3" x 14" x 36" piece of mahogany and asked if I wanted it (free!) because he didn't want to deal with the set-up time involved with removing a visible amount of twist. I clamped it in my (homemade) bench, hit the high corners with a #40, got it close with a 605 & flattened it out with a Type 11 8C. It wasn't finish smooth, but square enough to start working with it. It didn't take long at all. I thought his jaw was going to hit the top of his boots. He's coming back ASAP to check out some more of my stuff. He'd never seen a good quality well tuned plane in action before. I know this isn't a gloat, does it qualify as a smirk?
