Help please - brass hardware for barrel top chest

CONGER - the Irish diaspora in Munich

>I am looking for SOLID brass hardware for a large (barrel top) blanket chest I am building... similar, but not identical, to the picture.

I would like to use loose handles (for example like http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/page.asp?page=40221&category=3,41427,41375&ccurrency=2&SID= )that will support a lot of weight (I estimate the chest will weigh a total of 150lbs full -- with 4 handles -- each handle should be capable of 'jerk' lifting 40lbs... that means STURDY).

I also need a suitable fastner (any type except those that protrude far from the front of the chest... and not a REAL danger to prying children -- ie. no spikes etc) - also in solid brass. The fastner should have a total length of about 6", with enough screw holes to keep it firmly in place. I had looked at these ( http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/page.asp?page=40906&category=3,41427&ccurrency=2&SID= ), but they look too small.

Any suggestions????????

I am using BRUSSO brass hinges and BRUSSO brass stays ( http://www.brusso.com/stays.html ). Sadly, I can not find what I am looking for in the right size & quality..........

Can you help please?

PS.... any hints from RL of LV?

>This looks so much like a sea chest have you given any thought to multistrand braided flax/linen, cotton, or hemp rope (not sisal) as handles? They would be more than strong enough, smooth to the grab, and not dangerous to the kids unless they discovered someday that they could smoke the hemp. Nautical museum/antiques books could provide a pic if you're so inclined to consider rope.

>Hi Conger,

Beautiful chest! I did a google search on 'chest lifts' and may have found something for you--see link below. You might repeat that search and look further, as well as try 'chest hasp' or 'chest lock' for the fastener.

Again, a wonderful project.

>Conger,

Nice work!

You might try Van Dyke's and/or Whitechapel. They both have extensive hardware inventories. Van Dyke's is great; I like to think if they don't have it, there aren't any.
