affordable wood

>I live south of Dallas, about 30 minutes and being origanlly from Oklahoma where hard woods were plentiful, I am having a hard time finding ANY hardwood in this area that does not come from the HOME DEPOT and that does not caot an arm and a leg. If anybody out there knows of anywhere I can get decent wood at a decent price please help me.

I do have a barn full(almost) of 50-60 year old black walnut that I would be willing to trade for a different species of wood.

I think Austin Hardwoods is the cheapest of the bunch. You might also try using the Woodfinder service run by our host Ellis. You can just put in your zip code and it will tell you hardwood lumber yards up to 100 miles away.

I am a carpenter by trade.Also a handyman/Jack -of-all-trades.I work around my neighborhood mostly helping people keep up their old houses.I have a fairly large woodworking shop in my house where I work with both hand and power tools. At the moment I'm focusing on Windsor chairs building.I will build most anything if needed. I'm always learning,adapting,changing trying to broaden my woodworking skills.I work mostly with hand tools in my shop but will use power if it is a better way to get the desired result. My wife,Donna,and I live in the woods of Maine with our dogs,cats,and birds. We have 5 grown kids and six grandchildren. Woodcentral has been central to my growth as a woodworker. I pass through this place every day.

Transportation costs are not huge so that there won't be much difference between the cost of hardwood lumber in OK or TX, or CA for that matter.

Find a cabinet shop and ask them where they buy wood. If the shop uses it you can be confident that the source is ok to use and fairly priced.
