If this is hardwood you might want to go a little bigger for the larger holdfasts but the small ones will work fine with 3/4".

The hole should be just slightly larger in diameter so that the holdfast slides up and down without any effort at all. You don't want any friction, so I'd guess that the bench holes for mine are 1/8 to 3/16" greater in diameter than my holdfasts. As soon as you whack it down on something, it will lock up.
