Once again, I've bumbled

>Went to a huge flea market yesterday and lo and behold I found the perfect motor to replace the one that died on my lathe. 3/4 hp, 1725 rpm, shaft was 5/8 when I need a 1/2", but hey, no problem that a drill press can't solve, so I plunk down my $10 and I'm a happy, happy camper.

This morning a buddy comes by and I proudly show off the motor, how clean it is, shaft has no wobble, spins like a greased top, yup it's a Leland Faraday, oh yeah, I done good, good, good. So he asked me "Why'd you get a 3 phase one"? Huh? What? 3 Phase? How do you knw it's 3 phase ask I? Says so on the tag says he? WHAT? WHERE? ON SON OF A FISHING ROD said I.

Yup, sad but true, right there in pretty little letter it says 3 phase. Dang! Went to a motor shop hoping for a trade, but they had nowt to trade and recommended I fo to horrible Fright.

so once again I've managed to bumble up and buy something I don't need and will pay the devil to get rid of I'm sure. :~( Guess I'll sit next to the DeWalt RAS that's busily taking collecting dust in my back room.

Anybody got a good "I bumbled up and bought/did story to help cheer me up?

I have been woodworking for about 25 years now, and would consider myself an enthusiastic amateur. My claim to fame (or infamy) has always been fixing stuff. I spent time in the Air Force in the 60's then went to work as an electronic technician for civil service. I finally got my EE, and being fed up with the civil service nonsense, took a job with Ford Motor Company until I went with the split to Visteon last year. I got interested in music and started playing in a bluegrass band. I wanted a new guitar, and that kind of led me into woodworking. I bought some books, a few tools, and built a guitar. Luckily, I didn't know any better than to try that as a first ever project. I still play it when I get a chance, so it must not be too bad if it can live for over 20 years. After a stint in Mexico for my job, I moved into a new house and built a small shop. Since then I have been collecting tools and skills, probably more of the former than the latter ;-). Finding this site has done more for my skills and enjoyment than anything else. I have learned a lot and really enjoy the friendships that I have made here. I have been married to LOML (Lori) for 32 years now and have 6 kids. When they are all gone, I want to get a 1 bedroom house (so there is not room for them to move back in) and at least a 6 car heated/air conditioned garage for a shop. (Dream on...)

>Well, I bought an 8" jointer for $325 that was claimed to be single phase by the seller. Even had them fire it up for me to make sure it ran. Once I got it home and cleaned up, I realized that it had a 3 phase motor. I felt it was still a good deal so I didn't bother contacting the seller. I went to a motor shop and purchased a rebuilt Baldor motor for a good price. Won't make that mistake again.

That's the way it went, word for word. I gave him MY WORD that I'd only charge him my costs, and that just what I did and not one red cent more.

I am hear to tell you that when I read his message the vein in my forehead popped out an inch, damn near blew snot all over the place and I just about thrashed this monitior to bits all in an instant. I didn't know what to do first and got to admit to visions of giving Ernie and dang good thrashing. Made my response, went back and toned it down, went and had a smoke to try to cool off, but when the headache started I knew I had to call him.

Oh yeah, he thinks it's funny, yeah, a real riot, ha, ha, ha, ha! ;~)

I'd never do that myself! No never!!! What a dumb thing to do! Hahaha!

Of course I do have an unused 3/4HP Baldor 3PH motor.... but don't ask me where it came from!

Another option to consider - I read somewhere that if you get another (somewhat bigger) 3PH motor and you can make a rotary converter for it cheap. It might be a kluge though.

>Thanks fellas for cheering me up. Happy to know that I'm not the only buffoon to buy a 3ph motor without realizing it. Coarse, had Kurt known it he might of been able to get a few more dollars knocked off the price of the jointer.

Dan, tell me more about this VFD of which you speak. Variable speed control really intrigues me.

>It is possible to run three phase motors with a VFD that has single phase input. The electronics of the drive creates the missing phase. If the need for variable speed was not a very good extra, it would probably be cheaper to replace the motor. Used drives are available on the net and places like Ebay. Programming is very important, not for the uninformed. Some sources do it for you.
