>My father has several old hand planes that are solid wood(including the sole). There are no maker markings on most of them. My question is how do I make sure the sole is true, and how do I true the sole with out the risk of too much removal, and where can I find replacement irons, blades and locks for these planes. One in particular is a jack plane I believe, it is about 26 inches long, 4 inches thick, and about 4 inches wide. Any help would be appreciated.

>No maker's marks, they were probably shopmade. Check the sole for flatness with a straightedge. Mark areas that are high with pencils, then flatten it on a plate w/sandpaper until the straightedge shows it is flat.
Your "jack" is a jointer, and a big one at that.
Replacement irons are best found on Ebay, look for wood planes where the wood has wasted away. You want cast steel. You can always make new wedges yourself.
