>If all it had was 10 or 12 irons with it, then whoever bought it paid way too much. Now on the other hand, if it had the full complement of irons and there were the 10 or so extra tools with it, then it might have been a decent deal.

I often see 55's and 45's sell for way over what they are worth at auctions because they "look" like rare and expensive planes to many people that don't know much. I once bought a near mint No. 2 for $10 while on the same table a rather rusty and incomplete 45 sold for $250 when you see that you know what type of people are bidding.Have also seen 45 and 55's that had major breaks and repairs sell for crazy prices because bidders that don't know anything don't see it. One that stcks in my mind was one that had a neat owner made curly maple handle, very well done but still owner made and the plane had a big chip out of the casting , missing parts and no cutters.I was interested in at maybe $35 just because i thought the handle was neat. Saw it sell for about $200, few months later here it is back at the auction this time it sold for $125...Came back a third time and sold for $75 and a guy at the auction who has a shop bought it and put it out for $225. Not to certain he wasn't the fellow that had been buying it all along though........Todd

>Just did a quick ebay search for "Stanley 45" and looks like you could have gotten a nice complete one [all parts and cutters] for around $125-$150.....Think there were over 50 and the highest priced one I saw I believe only went for around $210....This is a common plane and the prices on ebay just isn't what it used to be for 45s [or other common planes]. This is the reason when ever I have a 45 to sell I part it out, have sold them for $400 plus this way. Noticed one guy selling individual cutters with them selling for between $5-$12 ea. I've never done that but is the way to go for maxiam profit. I have sold just the nickers for $40! ......Todd

If you can stand to wait a month or so, Ohio Tool Collectors usually have a February meeting in Pickerington, Ohio. Although it is not a sure thing, chances are you would be able to find a nice, complete example there for a reasonable price. The great thing about buying tools at a meet is that you can handle them and make sure there are no surprises before buying.

Sorry for the late response, sometimes work gets in the way of more important things!

Ohio Tool was trying to set up a website in the last year, but I'm not sure that they've made any progress. It is all volunteer and based on a friend of a friend type of thing. There didn't seem to be any members with much computer expertise at the meetings where the issue was discussed.

I'll also try to remember to look up the meeting schedule and post the information.
