I did receive a digital camera and a book by Graham Blackburn, "Traditional Woodworking Handtools", plus a couple of non-woodworking books I wanted. Oh, and the usual couple of flannel shirts, too. 8^) I hope everyone got their wish and gave as good as they got.

However I did get a poker card and chip set and the first 3 volumes of Alton Brown's DVD set.

And the presents I bought for myself were tools, just not hand tools:

1) Bosch 3915 SCMS

2) Dewalt 734 planer

3) Two Stabila Levels

I suspect I'll have to counter-balance all the electron usage by completing my Clifton collection with a #5 1/2 and finally getting the LV Low-Angle Jack.

And then there's all the shop projects I still have to make...a long list...too long!

There is on other present (if you can call it that)...though it was not for me. I am pretty happy for my brother who seems to be finally interested in doing something fun: making furniture. I will admit that I have helped him along in getting interested in it. He started his new job last week and he said he's enjoying it. It sure beats what he used to do, flipping burgers. I'm proud of him for taking a shot at something new and hopefully he will stick with it.

A few years back, there was a family in our community that came to our church for help. It seems the husband had lost his job and they needed money for food, so the pastor gave him some money. Our pastor at the time was in fact working part time at the local burger joint for spare cash just for situations like this. He knew they were hiring, so he mentioned it to the guy as he was giving him the money, that there were a number of jobs available at the local McDonalds. The guy looked at him and said "I am NOT flipping burgers for a living!". The pastors reply "Well, where do you think this money came from?"

An LN 14" tenon saw and a Boggs spoke shave, and a bunch of LN leather cases for those two and for block planes showed up. LV sent a Starrett combination square and the Starrett Pro-Site protractor.

My middle son is the only one with Neander inclinations � he picked up a series of 4 Stanley bench/block planes and some spokeshaves. I gave my brother one of those glazing heaters we used to use daily in the hardware store � they are hard to find� Got my Dad that Veritas scribe (I have one and he has been lusting after it).

Brother gave me a set of 1�+ Russell Jennings brace bits � mint, the largest was 1 �� � I had never seen one this big. LOML came through with the LN 164 � she�s a keeper. Gave myself a couple #45s and a dead mint #55 � still has the store hang tags on it although the box is a little rough.

However,in the tool department I was given a 33" wooden jointer that my friend said was laying around the barn for years.The sole is clean if a little convex and the cap iron is bent.Also the tote is long gone,but that's no problem.This is going to be a fun project. Less challenging than making a new one.From the look of the iron I believe this thing will take shavings once I straighten the cap iron.---Jack

It seems that some folks are more than willing to put thier hands out instead of doing for themselves.It might be handy for your pastor,minister,etc to maybe quote the teaching a man to fish vs giving him a fish thing when dealing with those type of folks.

One of my favorite quotes is by Mahatma Gandhi;

"The truth is that man needs work even more than he needs a wage.Those who seek the welfare of the workers,should be less anxious to obtain good pay,good holidays and good pensions for them than good work,which is the first of thier goods.For the object of work is not so much to make objects as to make men.A man makes himself by making something useful."

This from a man who routinely labored at tasks such as street sweeping while leading a nation.

Mainely,Bob-Who has picked produce,mowed lawns and flipped burgers when needed in order to feed his family,and is better for it.

I don't know the details, but I do know he gets more more per hour and more hours per week at the furniture place he works at.

Also, he gets to work during the day instead of the 5:00 am to 1 pm shift he used to have. And he gets weekends off too.

I received not one tool or gift certificate to get one; neither did I get forbearance or permission. That's fine with me. I didn't ask for any tools. I have lots of "would like to have"s, but no "need to have"s.

It's taken me a good long while, but I think I have pretty much been able to kick the gadgeteering disease. It's depressing, I know, not to want any shiney new toy...er...tools.

I did my fair share at A&P as a stock person/cashier while in high school and jr. college. Later as a clerk at a liquor store and catering while in college.
