The Todder 78
Greg Sloop, Portland Oregon
>Ok, so lets say that I decide to keep the 78 for a while - perhaps forever...though a #7 or #8 would probably be more useful for me right now. (Any collectors want to work out a trade? A good/decent user #7/8 and perhaps something else?)
Or, how do I go about establishing the value of this plane, and know what to pay for a #7 or #8?
I'm just tossing my options about. Truely, I feel almost bad just using this 78. I know I'm gonna drop it, and screw up the paint etc, so I either need to resign myself to screwing this one up, setting it on a shelf, or trading it for something I'd feel less guilty about screwing up.
So, the main thing, is how do I establish a base value? And how do I know what to pay for other stuff. Where should I shop for a #8, say. I'd really prefer something mostly fettled...as I don't feel at all skilled enough to flatten a sole or bedding etc...
Lastly, if I sharpen/flatten the iron in the 78 will I hurt it's value? How about "brightening" it up with wet/dry 600 on the exposed parts of the plane. What kinds of things should I do and not do?
Thanks all - and special thanks to Todd O! Santa indeed!
Cheers,
Greg
