It was a Stanley 78.

I'd appreciate some help dating and valuing it, as I feel almost criminal using this as a "user" when it's in such great shape. I'm really not a collector, and this fine dandy ought to be in some loving collectors hands. (I might keep it too, I even cut some shavings with it last night. Had some boxes with lids where the lip on the lids were too big. It cuts just fine, no sharpening required!

Thanks again Todd O! Perhaps Todd ought to chime in here and tell us about his gloatable find. (I heard it on email last night, but I don't want to steal his thunder...)

>According to Sir Walter, the box dates from 1935-1940 "and later". All the box dates are listed with a date and then say "and later", because the dates cannot be pinned down exactly, as they would have used up stock until the next printing. This is a kind of a nice box, common to some degree but not something you find at a flea market every week. That is a nice plane with the adjuster. You're not a collector now, but you will be, so you're going to want to hang onto that. You can send it to me for safe keeping till you want it back.

as you know Grag helped me un-dork my computer after I spent some time dorking it u by twiddling the knobs and flippin' switches. his help probably saved mr at least $100 and lots of aggravation, so I wanted to thank him by finding him a goodie, since he said that he lives in Old Tool Hell, and didn't have much time to haunt Flea Markets anyways, so I wanted to find him something niiiiiiiiiiiice.

I found several user planes, chisels, and other usual stuff, but nothing seemed to fit the bill of what I wanted.

Last Saturday while prowling the FM I spied this on a blanket on the ground, so I nonchantly inspected it, and dang if it wasn't complete and looked to be unused. I knew this was it as if he didn't like it, it was in good enough shape to easily sell or trade. I tried to act kinda' passively when I asked the seller how much, even tho I doing backflips internally. Seller says "I've got to get $25 for that", I said "How 'bout $20", to which he replied "I can get $100 for that up North when I go up for Christmas", so I forked over the $25. I was so excited, I rushed home to e-mail Greg for his snail mail address, and it just so happened that Ernie had e-mailed me, so I replied to him, and told him what I had got, and whom it was for. I just HAD to tell somebody!

Ya'll know the rest of the story. Gotta say tho, I had to get it out to Greg right quick before I got to attached to it. It is no-doubt the best find I have ever found, and it really makes me happy that Greg likes it so much.

So Greg, hows that for a shove down the Slippery Slope eh?

If I was you I'd probably be inclind to keep it as a display piece, but of coarse that's you call, and it will hurt my feeling none if you trade or sell it.

Big thanks to Ernie for not spilling the beans, but if he ever out-bids me again the gloves are going on! ;~)

I hold the same "principles" as ernie, if I reeckonize (egads, I think Ernie is rubbing off on me)I won't bid. that's only happened once tho as I don't know any other e-bay "handles".

Does kinda' serve you right that I alluded to the idea that you out-bid a buddy, after you went and accused me of paying $25 for a sawset! That kinda' talk could get my membership in the Fraternal Order of Bottom feeders pulled ya' know! Do it again, and I won't buy any more $60 slicks from you. Oops, that slipped. ;~)

The connection with the holiday timing is purely cowincidential(never can spell that word right, maybe Ernie can teach me too) ;~)

Now I almost widh I hadn't given it to him as my e-mail is floooded with folks wanting to do me favors. Lets see, I'd never have to wash my truck again, nor cut my grass, or take out my trash. Man, for a few old tools, I could really live like King Soloman,wish I could find good 'uns like that every weekend. ;~)

I do't care what anybody says, I do like my green '93 S-10, 4.3 v-6, automatic, wit 6 ft bed. I call it The Freen Flash! It has served me well. I would however like to get another '72 Chevy longbed.
