>We camp a lot and my favorite forest service "fireplace" is when they just have a cylinder of metal on a cememt slab and a grate to throw on top. Your wheel idea would simulate this arrangement . So would a pile of fire brick stacked up in a circle. You could put it on sand or crushed stone as well as cement.

This arrangement works well for cooking as well as just making a fire to sit by and make smores.

Yes sand, brick, and yes old rocks will work. I like to use new rocks myself, nothing less than 1,000,000,000 yrs old, the old ones just don't work out that well. Just some fun. Chad
