My mother turned 80 this year also. I booked a room for her and I on the side of Mt. Washington. Day two we summitted 6288' top od the North East and the worst weather in the world.

It was her life's goal to climb it at 65. We did it at 65, 66. she did it again 68. We did the WHOLE Presidential range at 75.

The box has a pleasing warmth to it--you seem to have a knack for making things with this attribute. I'm remembering the chest of drawers.

I think the box alone is exactly right, unless you know of something specific she would like. Here's why: It's just my own limited experience. I've known a few folks 80 years old, including my own mother years ago, and they didn't want a lot of new things. But they did want to be remembered, and this box is most meaningful. Plus it's nice to have a place to put small things they already have. Just my 2 cents.

>Wiley, thank you for the kind words. Perfume is my wifes' idea, and she is a good judge of people, so I have no difficulty going along with this. My parents (dad was 90 in June) live overseas and I wanted to give something more personal to my mum (who turns 80 this month). Hence the box - small enough to carry on a plane. I know this will be as meaningful to her now as when I made my first "construction" as a toddler.

>Thanks Todd. The lid is made out of a piece of Campher wood that I purchased several months ago, when I was looking for something with "evil" grain for the LA Jack review I did. I was knocked out by the wild and colourful grain. It was only a small piece of timber and, as it turned out, just enough to make this box (the box ends are also Campher).

This was incredibly difficult timber to plane. Grain going in every direction. I tried everything - LA and HA. I must admit that I ended up sanding the lid. There, I said it. I hang my head in shame...

But it is simply stunning. So stunning to my eye that I had to post another picture. The white rays (that look like reflections) are actually in the timber. Since my previous pics, I added a coat of wax to the Danish Oil finish. Lusterous! I hope you enjoy it as much as I.
